2008 Platinum Eagles
Platinum Coin Information
The 2008 Platinum Eagle was offered in three different versions, each with four different denominations. The first version was the standard bullion coin offering. These coins are sold through the US Mint's network of authorized purchasers purchasers at a fixed mark up to the market price of platinum. The second version was the proof coin offering. These coins are produced by the US Mint for sale to coin collectors. Proof coins feature a high quality cameo finish with frosted raised elements over mirrored background elements. The third version was the collectible uncirculated coins. These coins are struck on specially burnished blanks and carry a "W" mint mark.
Both the proof and collectible uncirculated versions of the coins carried the fourth design in the "Foundations of American Democracy" series. The design by Joel Iskowitz is a rendition of Lady Justice with scales suspended from a finger of her right hand and a sword in her left hand. An eagle is pictured in the background.
Each version of the coin was available in four different denominations. This included a 1 ounce coin with face value of $100, 1/2 ounce coin with face value of $50, 1/4 ounce coin with face value of $25, and a 1/10 ounce coin with face value of $10. The proof and collectible uncirculated coins were also offered in 4 Coin Sets containing one of each denomination.
Coin Mintages
The 2008 Platinum Eagles were released amidst a sharp increase and then decline in the price of platinum. This had a large impact on sales of the coins. The bullion coins showed strong sales towards the end of the year after the decline in platinum. The collectible proof and uncirculated coins had very slow sales while the price of platinum was high, and then were under sales suspension for several months while the price of platinum declined. The figures below represent estimated mintages based on unaudited US Mint data or recent sales data. The official numbers are sometimes not available for several years.
