2008 State Quarters

Coin Series

The 50 State Quarters program reached its final year in 2008. The series began in 1999 and featured five different quarters each year to honor each state in the order they ratified the Constitution or joined the union. The final five quarters in order of release were:

The final five reverse designs were some of the most beautiful of the series.  Oklahoma features the scissor-tailed flycatcher bird, New Mexico features the Zia Sun Symbol against a relief map of the state, Arizona features the Grand Canyon, Alaska features a grizzly bear with salmon, and Hawaii features King Kamehameha I. The coins were released on January 28, April 7, June 2, August 25, and November 2, 2008.

By the end of the series more than 34 billion State Quarters had been produced. A separate program was established to follow the State Quarters Program to honor the remaining jurisdictions of the United States. This program is the Washington DC & US Territories Quarters Program.
