2008 Proof Set

2008 Proof Set

The 2008 United States Proof Set was released by the US Mint on June 24, 2008.  The sets were priced at $26.95 and contained a total of 14 coins. Each set contains proof versions of the cent, nickel, dime, quarters, half dollar, and dollar coins. This includes all five 2008 State Quarters and all four 2008 Presidential Dollars.

The coins are packaged in three separate lenses. There are separate lenses for the State Quarters and Presidential Dollars. The remaining coins are contained in a third lens. All of the lenses are packaged in a custom outer box with a certificate of authenticity.

All coins are minted at the San Francisco Mint and carry the "S" mint mark. The coins carry a special cameo proof finish. The raised elements of the coin are frosted, while the background fields are mirrored. The Proof Set is one of the US Mint's most popular products.

The following coins are included in the 2008 US Proof Set:

  • 2008-S Proof Lincoln Cent
  • 2008-S Proof Jefferson Nickel
  • 2008-S Proof Roosevelt Dime
  • 2008-S Proof Oklahoma State Quarter
  • 2008-S Proof New Mexico State Quarter
  • 2008-S Proof Arizona State Quarter
  • 2008-S Proof Alaska State Quarter

  • 2008-S Proof James Monroe Dollar
  • 2008-S Proof John Quincy Adams Dollar
  • 2008-S Proof Andrew Jackson Dollar
  • 2008-S Proof Martin Van Buren Dollar

The 2008 Proof Set unexpectedly sold out in mid-December. Typically proof sets are available well into the following year. The early sell out, combined with an extremely low overall mintage have served to quickly escalate prices on the secondary market.

Separately, the United States Mint issued a 2008 Silver Proof Set, 2008 State Quarters Proof Set, and 2008 Presidential Dollar Proof Set. These sets were priced at $44.95, $13.95, and $14.95, respectively.
