2009 Bronze Lincoln Cents

Bronze 2009 Lincoln Cents

Coin Information

Some 2009 Lincoln Cents will be minted in a special composition, which is identical to the original composition used for the first Lincoln Cents released in 1909. These special numismatic versions were authorized under the same legislation which specified the four rotating reverse designs.

The US Mint has stated that they will include these special numismatic coins in annual sets. They will have a composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, which many are referring to as "bronze." All 2009 Lincoln Cents struck for circulation and for inclusion in the US Mint offered two roll sets, will have the standard composition of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper.

The 2009 Bronze Lincoln Cents will be included in the following sets:

  • 2009 Proof Set - This 18 coin set will include four 2009-S Bronze Lincoln Cents struck by the San Francisco Mint. These will be proof coins.
  • 2009 Silver Proof Set - This 18 coin set will include some 90% silver coins, but also the 2009-S Proof Bronze Lincoln Cents.
  • Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set - This special set will include the 2009 Proof Lincoln Commemorative, as well as the four different 2009-S Proof Bronze cents.
  • 2009 Mint Set - This annual set includes 36 different coins. Included will be four 2009 Bronze Lincoln Cents produced at the Philadelphia Mint and four produced at the Denver Mint. These coins will have a satin finish that has been used in recent Uncirculated Mint Sets.

So far collectors have taken a keen interest in these bronze 2009 Lincoln Cents. Since they are only included in the US Mint's annual sets, the mintages will be in the low millions, while the regular zinc versions struck for circulation will be minted in the hundreds of millions.
