2009 First Spouse Gold Coins

Coin Series
The First Spouse Gold Coins program will enter its third year of release in 2009. Each year since the series began in 2007, 24-karat gold coins have been released to honor the spouse's of each President. Each coin contains one-half ounce of gold and has a legal tender value of $10. Each year's First Spouse coin releases have been issued to roughly correspond to the releases of each Presidential Dollar.
For 2009, a total of five different coins will be released. This is a change from prior years of the program which have featured four coins. The issuance of five coins is to provide a separate coin for John Tyler's first and second wives. The following First Ladies will be honored on coins this year:
The obverse of each coin will feature a portrait of each First Lady. The reverse designs will feature unique designs emblematic of the life and work of each spouse. A variety of themes are featured including Anna Harrison depicted sharing her passion for education with children, Letitia Tyler on Cedar Grove Plantation, and Sarah Polk serving as her husband's private secretary.
Release dates for each coin have not yet been announced, but they should roughly correspond with the release date for each Presidential Dollar coin throughout 2009.
