Coin Information:

2010 American Gold Eagles

Gold Coin Information

The 2010 American Gold Eagle offerings will once again be impacted by the heightened demand for physical precious metals. This will begin with the delayed release of the bullion coins and will likely have implications on the status of potential collectible proof and uncircualed versions of the coins.

The 2010 Gold Eagle bullion coins will be released later than usual. Typically, the United States Mint has begun production of bullion coins bearing the following year's date in late November or early December. This has allowed them to accept orders from authorized purchasers in late December for delivery at the beginning of January. This year, the US Mint did not commence production of 2010 Gold Eagles until January 2010. Orders will be accepted from authorized purchasers on January 19, 2010.

The bullion coins will also begin the year subject to the allocation program that the US Mint has used during period of high demand. This program rations the number of coins that can be ordered at the authorized purchaser level. Additionally, bullion coins will only be produced in one ounce size for the time being. The status of fractional weight versions remains unknown. In the prior year, the one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce coins were only offered for a brief period in December.

The United States Mint previously stated that they would be working to increase blank supplies to allow for the production of 2010 Proof Gold Eagles and 2010-W Uncirculated Gold Eagles. These coins had been canceled in the prior year, in order to focus on the production of bullion coins. The status of the offerings in 2010 will continue to be dependent on the US Mint's ability to satisfy the full public demand for bullion coins with the available supply of precious metals blanks.
