Coin Information:

Alaska State Quarter

Coin Information

The Alaska State Quarter was released on August 25, 2008. This was the 49th coin in the State Quarter series, continuing the final year of the series. A launch ceremony was held on the Colony Stage at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer.

The obverse of the coin was designed by William Cousins, based on the original Washington Quarter obverse designed by John Flanagan. It includes the inscriptions "United States of America," "In God We Trust," "Liberty," and "Quarter Dollar." The mint mark is also included to the right of Washington. This design has been used for the obverse of every coin in the State Quarter series.

The reverse of the coin was designed by Susan Gamble and engraved by Charles Vickers. It features a girzzly bear clutching a salmon in its mouth. This symbolizes the natural beauty and wildlife of the state. Inscriptions include "E Pluribus Unum," "Alaska," "The Great Land," and the dates 1959 and 2008.

The Philadelphia mint produced 251.8 million coins and the Denver mint produced 254 million. Proof and silver proof versions of the coin were produced at the San Francisco Mint.
