A new series of location themed quarter dollars began in 2010, known as the America the Beautiful Quarters. This new series follow the success and mirrors the format of the previous 50 State Quarters and District of Columbia & U.S. Territories Quarters programs. For the present series, the focus will turn to the National Parks and sites throughout America.
Authorization comes from the bill H.R. 6184: America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008, which became Public Law No: 110-456. The law authorizes the design and issuance of quarters emblematic of national parks or federally designated sites in each U.S. state, U.S. Territory, and the District of Columbia. Unique designs will be released at a rate of five per year with a single design in the final year, making for a total of 56 different coins released over the course of 12 years.
The order of release will be based on the order in which the areas were designated as national sites. At the option of the US Secretary of the Treasury, the series may be extended for another round of designs. This option may be exercised any time before the ninth year of the series.

The National Park or site being recognized will be depicted on the reverse of each coin. The format used by the US Mint will consist of a an outer circle for inscriptions surrounding a central area for the design. The outer circle includes the name of the site, the location (state or territory), the date of issue, and "E Pluribus Unum".
The obverse of each coin features a restored version of the portrait of George Washington, used on the 1932 Washington Quarter. The restored version eliminates some of the updates the US Mint had made to John Flanagan's original design. The obverse inscriptions include "United States of America", "Liberty", "In God We Trust", and "Quarter Dollar".
