2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin

Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagle

Coin Information

With the release of the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin, the United States Mint has recreated what many have called the most beautiful gold coin in history. The coin is a digitally reproduced version of the original Ultra High Relief 1907 Double Eagle as designed by Augustus Saint Gaudens.

The US Mint first announced their plans to recreate the coin on March 13, 2008 during a meeting of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. Designs of the coin were officially unveiled on July 30, 2008 following the opening ceremony of the ANA World’s Fair of Money. The first coins were struck on November 24, 2008 at the West Point Mint. Coins officially went on sale January 22, 2009 at 12:00 Noon ET.

While the coins are based on the original plasters for the 1907 Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagle, several changes were made to update the designs. The obverse carries the Roman Number date “MMIX” for the current date 2009 and the number of stars was changed from 46 to 50 in order to signify the current number of US states. The motto “In God We Trust” has been added to the reverse design, beneath the rays of the sun. A larger border has also been added to the obverse and reverse of the coins.

Only 2009 dated coins will be produced and they will be struck to demand. Each coin will contain one ounce of 24 karat gold. Only 2009 dated coins will be produced. The coins were intended to be struck to demand, however as a practical matter, the supply of gold blanks that the US Mint is able to obtain may limit production.

Coins were initially priced at $1,189.00 per coin with an ordering limit of one per household. The price is subject to potential weekly adjustment in response to the changing price of gold. The ordering limit is also evaluated weekly and may be raised or eliminated in the future. In the first five days of sales, over 40,000 coins were sold.
